What did we do on The Anne Boleyn Experience 2018?
We stayed at Anne Boleyn’s home for the duration of this 4 night Anne Boleyn Experience tour focusing on the life and death of Queen Anne Boleyn, second wife of King Henry VIII. We had exclusive use of the entire Astor Wing where we dined for 3 nights, the final night we dined at the 14th century lodge, now pub restaurant, the Wheatsheaf.
After time to settle into our luxurious bedrooms, guest met for dinner in our private dining suite before a talk from the fantastic Gareth Russell.
Our first full day was spent at Hever Castle enjoying the castle and gardens before a talk on Tudor costume from expert Bess Chilvers. Two of our party were able to experience being dressed in Tudor dress as Bess used them to demonstrate all the different parts of a Tudor woman's dress! Before dinner we met in the castle for a prossecco drinks reception (with a surprise visit from Henry VIII - aka Owen George) and were then taken on a private, after hours tour of the castle.
On our third day we visited the ever impressive Hampton Court Palace for a guided tour and free time to explore the palace. After our 4 course meal, Claire Ridgway gave us a talk on the 'Men of 1536' about the men who were fatally caught up in Anne's downfall.
On our last full day we travelled to the Tower of London and to the site of Anne's execution to pay our respects and learn more about her time at the Tower before having free time to visit the rest of the tower and the Crown Jewels!
Whilst staying at Hever Castle, our group had use of the grounds even after hours and were free to roam and explore. We were also able to use the outdoor heated swimming pool!
Hever truly is a magical place and we can't wait to be back there! You can join us there on The Anne Boleyn Experience - May 2019 and the Executed Queens tour - July 2019.
This tour was led by Claire Ridgway of The Anne Boleyn Files and The Tudor Society and Philippa Lacey Brewell of British History Tours and British History with Philippa Lacey Brewell.
